UNITED AIRWAY DISEASE: NOSE AND LUNGS
Daniel Goh Yam Thiam
National University Children's Medical Institute, Singapore
The upper and lower airways form a continuum and share many anatomical and histological properties. They also interact in complex ways; most commonly seen in the relationship between allergic rhinitis and asthma. This can be seen in epidemiological data, pathophysiological changes, observations in emerging biomarkers as well as clinical and treatment evidences. Allergic rhinitis and asthma can be considered manifestations of a single inflammatory process, with implications for an integrated diagnostic and therapeutic approach, for the optimal management of both conditions.
