The Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a clinical syndrome of acute hypoxemic respiratory failure due to lung inflammation, not caused by cardiogenic pulmonary edema. Its definition has evolved over the years with the latest released as New Global Definition ARDS 2023. Several developments have included the use of high flow nasal oxygen (HFNO), expanded use of pulse oximetry in place of arterial blood gases, use of ultrasound for chest imaging, and the need for applicability in resource-limited settings.
