Also termed Physician-Led Studies, Investigator-Initiated Research (IIR) is conceived, developed, and conducted by an investigator or a team of investigators without the directives or priorities set by funding agencies. Many of these investigators are clinicians intrinsically motivated by questions concerning their day-to-day practice. How does IIR differ from Industry-Sponsored Research (ISR)? How does one start and finish an IIR? What value does IIR bring? What are the challenges in IIR? What are the potential solutions? This talk hopes to shed light on IIR with insights from a Malaysian investigator who initiated a global landmark clinical trial during the COVID-19 pandemic.
