MANAGING DUO CHALLENGES: LUNG CANCER IN INTERSTITIAL LUNG DISEASE

The coexistence of lung cancer in patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD) presents unique clinical challenges, particularly in the areas of screening, treatment and the impact of acute exacerbations. This presentation will highlight the critical role of proactive screening strategies in the early detection of lung cancer in ILD patients, who are at increased risk for malignancy. We will discuss recommended screening protocols, including the use of low-dose CT scans, tailored to this population to improve early detection and patient outcomes.
In addition, we will review the role of antifibrotic agents in the management of lung cancer in the ILD population. Recent studies suggest that antifibrotics may have a dual role, potentially reducing the progression of lung fibrosis while also influencing the management of associated malignancies. However, we must also address the limitations of cancer treatment due to acute exacerbations of ILD, which can complicate therapy and adversely affect patient prognosis. The presentation will highlight the importance of multidisciplinary approaches to optimise care, with a focus on balancing the management of ILD and lung cancer to improve quality of life and survival
