VOCAL CORD DYSFUNCTION IN CHILDHOOD AND ADOLESCENCE

Vocal cord dysfunction is characterized by paradoxical adduction of the vocal cords with resultant laryngeal airflow limitation in inspiration, and a myriad of symptoms that can mimic many respiratory conditions especially asthma. This is a well-recognized condition in children as well as adults and can often result in complex or invasive diagnostic investigations, as well as attempted therapeutic interventions with no satisfactory response. It can often be misdiagnosed as asthma but can also co-exist with asthma.
