The pathogenetic interplay between atopy and asthma development is complex, influenced by gene-environment interactions, epigenetic variations and early-life microbiome modifications. Personal, parental history of atopy and multiple allergic sensitization (AS) to aeroallergens are major risk factors for asthma development. Non-allergic factors e.g. early life viral infections may trigger the specific Ig E pathway and influence the occurrence and exacerbation of asthma. Atopy is also strongly associated with persistent, recurrent and late-onset wheezing/asthma phenotypes. The type and onset of AS to specific allergens may influence asthma occurrence and severity. Classification of specific clinical phenotypes and biological endotypes of asthma may be helpful for personalized and more targeted patient-oriented treatment
